Prof Dr Leo A. Ginsel
On January 7, 2009, Leo Ginsel, Treasurer and member of the executive board of the European Microscopy Society (EMS) died in Mook, The Netherlands. He was born on July 24, 1947 in Leiden where he also studied Biology. He gained his PhD in 1979 by studying the network of interactions between cell coat, surface organelles, lysosomes, uptake and degradation in intestinal epithelial cells. In 1991 he moved to Nijmegen and became full professor of Cell Biology and Histology. Apart from scientific work itself, it became evident that scientific organisations also attracted his attention, so in the period 1996-2003 he was the chairman of the Dutch Society for Microscopy (NVvM). During his career, Leo published many articles, at first concerning his work on intestinal cells; later his studies also included monocytes, macrophages, granulocytes and finally the diaphragm. Many of his articles are written in collaboration with colleagues from other universities and were published in high-ranking international journals. The EMS has seen Leo Ginsel as a hardworking, sympathetic biologist engaging himself in many different aspects of life.

In 2009, Austria will host the 9th Multinational Congress on Microscopy and the Dreiländertagung, presenting the joint meeting Microscopy Conference (MC) 2009. The MC will take place from Aug. 30 to Sep. 4, 2009 in Graz. The main areas covered will be instrumentation and methodology, materials science and life science. The program comprises plenary lectures, keynote lectures, poster sessions, symposia and workshops. Special emphasis will be given on the poster presentations, which means a considerable time will be allocated to the presentations and discussion of the posters. During the conference there will be a trade exhibition displaying modern instruments and state-of-the-art developments in microscopy. The venue of the Microscopy Conference will be Congress Graz in the historic city center of Graz.

The European Light Microscopy Initiative’s (ELMI) 9th annual meeting on advanced microscopy will be held from June 9-12, 2009 in Glasgow, Scotland. Both, scientific presentations and hands-on workshops will be offered to the attendees. ELMI is a communication network of advanced microscopy users and manufacturers of imaging equipment. The conference aims to promote biological imaging as a fundamental tool for basic and applied research in the life science field. It will assist scientists working in the field of life science to exploit the power of biological imaging by improving the transfer of knowledge. ELMI meetings rotate through Europe, typically hosted by members who run imaging facilities. The next ELMI meeting, held at Caledonian University, Glasgow, will be hosted by Kurt I. Anderson from the Beatson Cancer Research Institute and Gail McConnell from the Institute of Biophotonics.

FEI Company has acquired substantially all of the assets of Intellection Holdings of Brisbane, Australia. Intellection’s primary product is the Qemscan automated mineralogy system. The purchase increases FEI’s presence in the automated mineralogy market for mining companies. The purchase price was approximately $2.8 million. Automated mineralogy systems identify minerals in polished sections of drill core, particulate, or lump materials and quantify a wide range of characteristics, such as mineral abundance, grain size, and liberation.
